Momentum and Force

Created

Momentum is mass × velocity (“amount of motion”). p=mv[kg⋅m/s]p = mv \quad [\text{kg·m/s}]

Force = rate of change of momentum (how much momentum changes per second): F=Δ(mv)ΔtF = \frac{\Delta(mv)}{\Delta t}

Two ways to change momentum per second:

WayExampleForce
① Same mass, change its speedcar acceleratingF=m aF = m\,a (constant mm)
② New mass every second gets a speedthrowing balls, wings pushing air down, water jetF=m˙ vF = \dot m\, v
Where it shows up:
  • Lift: wings push m˙air=ρAliftv\dot m_{air} = \rho A_{lift} v down at vliftv_{lift} → Mg=m˙airvliftMg = \dot m_{air} v_{lift}
  • Drag: same “mass swept per second” m˙=ρAv\dot m = \rho A v

Balance (no vertical acceleration → forces equal): floating boat FB=MgF_B = Mg, level flight (= constant height) lift =Mg= Mg, hydrofoil at vminv_{min} Flift=MgF_{lift} = Mg.
