W2.1 Energy Use in Transportation
Created · Updated
Key points
- Moving at constant speed = continuously giving energy away: push the medium aside (Drag), push air down (Lift), deform tyres (Rolling resistance), throw away at every stop (Braking power)
- ; only the terms that apply to the medium (water / air / land)
- Energy per distance = total resistive force →
- Ships: weight carried by Buoyancy. Archimedes’ principle → draught → submerged area → water drag (air drag ≈ 1%)
- Compare modes per cargo or person and distance: kWh/(tonne·100 km), kWh/(person·100 km)
- Real vehicles: engine efficiency ~25%, start-up losses, climate control, accessories → car 40–120 kWh/100 km (lecture, source K. Blok)
Chains
- Ship: Buoyancy. Archimedes’ principle → → → Drag → → → per tonne or person → fuel mass (, energy density)
- Plane: Lift () + Drag () → optimal speed
- Car / bus / train: Drag + Rolling resistance + Braking power
Calculation pattern (HW)
- = load factor × (HW: 80%, car 60%)
- → kWh/km () → ×100
- ÷ cargo mass (tonnes) or ÷ persons (full capacity)
- Fuel: (HW: gasoline 12.4 kWh/kg, = 25%)
Typical traps
- Divide by the cargo (load), not the vehicle’s own mass; per person: full capacity unless told otherwise
- Engine power given = maximum → load factor first
- knots → km/h (1 knot = 1.85 km/h); bhp → kW (1 bhp ≈ 0.746 kW, not given in HW)
- km/h → m/s (÷ 3.6) before cubing
- “weight = 2000 kg” in exam text = mass [kg]; weight as a force = [N]. In ship tasks = width → write ,
- Model gives mechanical power; fuel needs ÷
- Nov 2023 2b answer key: 91.4 → recalculated 93.3 kWh/(person·100 km) (slip in key)
“Derive …” checklist
- Write the target (, , …)
- Read the sentence right before it: the hint is there (“power = force × velocity”, “first derive D”)
- Use only the formulas and symbols given in the question (not the formula-sheet version of a similar thing)
- Check what the next sub-question needs (a number → the expression must contain given values)
- Transport: = a force
Order-of-magnitude check (lecture, K. Blok)
| Mode | kWh/(person·km) |
|---|---|
| Passenger car | 0.44 |
| City bus | 0.27 |
| Local train/tram | 0.23 |
| Intercity train | 0.14 |
| High-speed train | 0.3 |
| Aircraft | 0.55 |
| (×100 → kWh/(person·100 km)) |
