W6.2 Energy Distribution

Created

Key points

  • District heating pipe: heat leaks through insulation + soil (series, [K/W]) → Thermal resistance
  • The leak cools the flowing fluid → Advection gives the temperature drop
  • Flow needed to deliver a heat demand: V˙=Q˙ρCp(Tsupply−Treturn)\dot V = \frac{\dot Q}{\rho C_p (T_{supply} - T_{return})}

Chain

Rins+RsoilR_{ins} + R_{soil} → Q˙loss=ΔT/R\dot Q_{loss} = \Delta T / R → ΔTfluid=Q˙loss/(V˙ρCp)\Delta T_{fluid} = \dot Q_{loss} / (\dot V \rho C_p) → ToutT_{out}

Typical traps
  • Pipe RR is in K/W → no AA
  • Volumetric heat capacity [J/(m³K)] already contains ρ\rho (table also lists ρ\rho → don’t use both)
  • The fluid does not stay in the pipe for an hour: use rates (per second) or the residence time L/vL/v
Exam
  • Oct 2025 Task 2f–g: Mars district heating: Q˙loss\dot Q_{loss} ≈ 3.5 kW, ToutT_{out} = 69.48 °C, V˙\dot V = 6.2·10⁻⁴ m³/s
  • Nov 2023 Task 1d–e (pipe outlet temperature), MCQ Nov 2023 5.5 (HVDC cable) → not done yet
